Novartis recently announced its investment in a new radiopharmaceutical production facility in Haiyan County, Zhejiang Province, China. The total investment is expected to exceed 600 million yuan. The move is aimed at accelerating the introduction of innovative radioligand therapy to meet the clinical needs of cancer patients in the country. Production is expected to begin by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approval. As a global leader in the pharmaceutical industry, Novartis' investment in radioligand therapy not only expands its influence in the global pharmaceutical market, but also marks a new phase in the development of China's healthcare industry.

 

Technological Innovation in Radioligand Therapy

Radioligand therapy is a treatment method that uses radiolabelled ligands to target tumour cells and kill them directly with radiation energy. Its advantage over traditional chemotherapy and radiotherapy lies in its ability to precisely localise tumour cells, minimising damage to healthy cells and providing a safer and more effective treatment. The application of this technology marks a new era in cancer treatment.

In April 2023, the National Drug Administration issued the "Opinions on Reforming and Improving the Evaluation and Approval Management System for Radiopharmaceuticals", which encourages innovation in radiopharmaceuticals based on clinical value and promotes the import registration of original research radiopharmaceuticals already on the overseas market. It also proposed to prioritise the evaluation and approval of marketing authorisations for radiopharmaceuticals that are urgently needed in clinical practice.

 

The Chinese government's support for the pharmaceutical industry and growing medical demand are creating favourable conditions for the promotion and use of this emerging treatment. The investments made by industry leaders in China not only accelerate the localisation of radioligand therapy, but also contribute to the overall technological advancement of the Chinese healthcare industry.
